CHRISTODORA, by Tim Murphy -- Narrated by Cassandra Campbell, Christa Lewis, Suzanne Elise Freeman, Prentice Onayemi, Thom Rivera, Kyla Garcia, Will Damron
Literature -- 4 stars
Audiobook Narration -- 4 stars
Book: The story starts in the 1980s, at the beginning of the AIDS crisis in New York City, and follows a tangle of artists, social workers, and junkies, all with some connection to an apartment building in the East Village known as the Christodora. The book follows the characters for forty years, ending with an imagining of the 2020s. ----- If you are offended by drugs and sex, skip this book; but you'll be missing a great telling of those who were sucked into the beginning of the AIDS maelstrom and those who came out the other end to continue the fight. Complex and satisfying.
Narration: Some of the readers were excellent, some were not. With so many, you always know someone different is coming soon, so none are really distracting. The book is written in the third person, so I have to wonder why they bothered with a cast this large, but as a whole they made it work and work well.
