THE WOLF'S HOUR, by Robert McCammon

Fantasy -- 5 stars

A small boy sees his family killed by Russian revolutionary guards, and escapes into the forest where he is attacked by wolves.  The next, as they say is history--World War II history.  Taken in and educated by his werewolf protector, Mikail  Gallatinov grows up in the Russian forest, only moving to London after his pack is hunted and eliminated.  A member of the British military, now known as (human) Michael Gallatin, he is sent into German territory in response to a cryptic message received from an ally spy.  Spies, deserters, a wolf man, and a German plan to defeat the D-Day invasion. -----  A masterful mixture of history, dark fantasy, and myth that builds to a satisfying climax.  Fast-paced, complex, and populated with interesting people.  "He slept, and dreamed of a wolf who dreamed he was a man who dreamed he was a wolf who dreamed."
