THE SECRET WISDOM OF THE EARTH, by Christopher Scotton

Literature -- 5 stars

Kevin and his mother are grieving the loss of Kevin's brother when they arrive to spend the summer with his grandfather in Appalachia.  The mountain heritage of the small town is being torn apart by a mining company determined to blow the mountain tops open and fill the hollows with the debris, and grandpa is trying to rally the town to fight "the company." Kevin is a city kid who learns to love the land as much as his grandfather, but when his new friend, Buzzy, witnesses a hate crime, the family is fighting for more than its Appalachian heritage.  I can't recommend this book highly enough.  Infuriating, intense, and heartbreaking, it's a love story to nature and the art of growing up.
