The Duke of Kiskaddon has attempted to remove King Severn Argentine from the throne. The price he must pay for failure is to give up his 8 year-old son, Owen, to the service of the king. Owen is not meant to survive, but he finds an ally in a mysterious woman who dwells in the castle but who no one seems to know exists. ----- If you're familiar with Jeff Wheeler's Muirwood trilogy, this one is so much better.
