THE GIRL WITH NO NAME, by Diney Costeloe

Literature -- 2 1/2 stars

A young Jewish girl is evacuated from Germany to London during WWII.   She settles in, makes friends, her refuge family loves her. She is injured during the Blitz, forgets her name, and her new family can't find her. She gets sent to another city where she makes friends, and the crusty lady who takes her in becomes a marshmallow lady who loves her.  She remembers her name.  Blah, blah, blah. What could have been a good story instead was so predictable it was ludicrous. Everyone--and I mean everyone--is unflinchingly "good." The one token bad boy is really only semi-bad, and that just for a few pages near the end as he is about to exit the story. All that goodness makes for a boring read. The writing style, short sentences and unnaturally upbeat dialogue don't help.  I honestly thought maybe it was written for middle school readers.
