CLOUD CUCKOO LAND, by Anthony Doerr

Literature - 5 stars

Anna, in 15th century Constantinople; Zeno, in modern day Idaho; Konstance, in an interstellar starship far in the future--three stories, three ages, three people, each yearning for something bigger than themselves and finding it in an ancient Greek manuscript. ----- Sometimes you unexpectedly come across a book that makes all others smaller.  Cloud Cuckoo Land is one of those.  An intelligent work of nearly inconceivable imagination, each story is like a richly embroidered tapestry, immersive and difficult to leave.  The characters are all people who breathe and force you to feel with them.  While the manuscript is a major plot point in each story, the connection is rendered so subtly that the full meaning doesn't become obvious until the end. And the ending will surprise even the most adept story detective.
