BACCHANAL, by Veronica G. Henry

Fantasy -- 3 1/2 stars

Eliza Meeks has a gift.  She can talk to animals.  What Eliza doesn't have is a family.  When the white front man for a black-owned traveling carnival offers her a job, she takes the chance.  But this isn't any ordinary Depression-era carnival.  The carnies all have extraordinary gifts too; and the owner is a demon. ----- Dark and imaginative, where good and evil coexist, and care for their own, this is a story so atmospheric, it seemed like the lights dimmed when I opened the pages.  The amalgamation of human and other worldly carnies into one entity as imagined by Ms. Henry for this traveling troupe is well done, giving the characters a degree of realism that adds much to the tale.  I almost gave this novel a 4 star rating, but despite the strong elements presented, there seemed to be an absence of tension in the story itself.  Knowing what was coming shouldn't have been this easy.
