Literature -- 4 1/2 stars
Annie Beyers' life is just about perfect. She has a husband she loves, a small daughter she adores, and the country home she always dreamed of. Following an automobile accident, she wakes to find that none of it is real. Or that's what she is told. With the help of therapy, she is beginning to accept that her true life is that of a successful artist in Manhattan; but she can't get "her" daughter out of her head. ----- There is one word that sums up this well written novel: unsettling. Ms. McNeil has shared a lot of information about Annie and her life (lives?), but nothing secure on which a reader can safely plant their feet--which is the whole point. A twist that seems to offer something solid is quickly pulled away, leaving you, once again, wondering. It is a magnificent balancing act--an entire book created without an ounce of concrete.
