Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars
Miles Cookson has more money than he can ever need. Miles Cookson is also dying. After discovering that he has a horrible, inherited disease, Miles begins to search for the children he may have fathered when he was a donor at a fertility clinic twenty years ago. His plan to leave each of his offspring enough money to guarantee them the care they will need in case they have inherited his disease is met with some serious opposition. ----- This book starts out slowly, but once it picks up, it flies to the end. The first twist upends everything you thought you knew about the story. What seemed obvious is now suspect. Characters you believed you had figured out are about to call your bluff. Mr. Barclay's style doesn't allow for in-depth analysis or characterizations, but does take full advantage of an author's right to bend the improbable to his needs and make it ring true. A solid read with a satisfying ending.
