Fantasy -- 4 stars
Book: The emperor and his three eldest sons are dead, killed in an "accident." This leaves the youngest son, a half-goblin boy, barely out of puberty, to take the throne; but he has lived his entire life in exile, with no experience in court politics or intrigues. Still, he has to find a way to keep the kingdom, faerie and goblin alike together. ----- At last! A completely stand alone fantasy novel--no wars, no quest, just a good story. Court life and rules are interesting and well written as are the diverse characters who make up the boy emperor's new life. His development from a callow and lost boy to a young man of character makes for an enjoyable journey and a satisfying and hopeful ending. The one fault is the complicated use of character names. I am grateful I decided to "read" this as an audiobook. I can't imagine trying to decipher the long monikers in the print edition.
Narration: Well paced, pleasant narration without histrionics make this an easy listening experience. Kudos for making those long and complicated names seemingly flow from his lips.
