Literature -- 4 1/2 stars
All Adunni, wants is to go to school and become a teacher, but girls in her small Nigerian village are expected to become wives and to give birth to boy babies. When her mother dies, her father breaks his promise to allow her to continue her education and instead sells her to a rich man to be his third wife. When tragedy strikes her new family, Adunni runs, deciding that if she is ever to find her "louding voice," she must try now. --- Written in lyrical broken English, Adunni's fighting spirit soars to fill a Nigerian culture so ripely described it is almost another character. The people she encounters breathe with kindness and cruelty, each trying to live as best they can. The outcome has a bit of a Hallmark Movie of the Week feel to it, but the journey is to be savored.
