Audiobook Narration -- 5 stars
Book: Red Bluff, Mississippi is a town slowly being swallowed by kudzu, full of broken people, and over seen by an aging sheriff with the best intentions. Drifters and people with nowhere else to go seem to be the best his town can summon. Colburn, who lived there as a child, returns to accept an offer of free property where he can build his junkyard sculptures. Not everyone is happy he's back. ----- Depressing in a way that gets under your skin, this is a book where everything happens, but nothing changes. Populated with a cast of diverse characters, Mr. Smith brings you to the edge of knowing each one better before pulling back and allowing them to escape any real unmasking. The result is a story that makes you feel like you passed through without leaving any traces of ever having been there.
Narration: Mike McColl gives an easy, steady reading that keeps the pace going even as the sleepy town seems to sit unmoving. His quiet style fits well with a story unwilling to give up its secrets.
