Horror - 3 1/2 stars
It hasn't rained in months in this small town in Arizona. Then one night, a sinkhole opens blocking the only road in or out of town. And the rains come. By dawn, most of the town has disappeared and the sheriff and one deputy are left to protect the living while dealing with sightings of shadows who read minds. "Tell me your evil." ----- A fable of personal accountability gets a serviceable telling. The characters are comfortable, if not exciting or terribly original, and the quick pace keeps the story moving nicely though he sometimes gets a bit carried away with his attempt to be literary. Describing the rain: "He was still under the eave as he lifted his face to the sky, watching the huge drops come down at him in slow motion, emerging from the darkness like tiny, oval invaders the moment they reached the halo of the dim security light." Fortunately this does not happen often . Mr. Coleman earns half a star for a clever ending that dovetails with the true nature of the town's invaders.
