Literature -- 5 stars
On a back field on a small farm in Habit, Kentucky, there once was a hotel. These days it's St. Elizabeth's Catholic Home for Pregnant Girls. Rose Clinton arrives at St. Elizabeth's pregnant just like all the other girls, but her story is a bit different. Everybody lies, but not like Rose. Everybody leaves, but not Rose. ----- Rare is a novel filled with characters who confound and touch the heart at the same time. Rose Clinton is one such character. Surrounded by a complex supporting cast, Ms. Patchett creates a world for her that makes you feel like you're observing real people through gauze while you wait for someone or something to rip that safety net away--somehow comfortable and tense at once. Everything about this book rings true. This is one of those books that makes you feel you are less and more for having closed the cover for the last time.
