HEAVEN, MY HOME, by Attica Locke, narrated by J.D. Jackson
Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars
Audiobook Narration -- 4 stars
A Highway 59 - Book 2
Book: Texas Ranger Darren Matthews is sent to a tiny town in Eastern Texas when nine year old Levy King goes missing after taking his grandfather's small boat out on the lake without permission. His white supremacist family wants him back. They also want to take over prime land owned by an elderly black man. To Darren, it's not clear which is more important to them. ----- Ms. Locke writes a sophisticated story of lies and dirty dealings that exposes old prejudices in a story steeped with believable and complex characters living in a world where no one is completely trustworthy. Note: A vein of Book 1 in this series continues in Book 2, so while each is a complete story, I recommend reading Bluebird, Bluebird first.
Narration: J.D. Jackson has an odd and somewhat off-putting speech pattern where he puts pauses in the middle of sentences for no apparent reason. It was more obvious in the first book, so someone may have worked with him on it in this recording. His characterizations remain dead-on and cleanly defined, and the narration's pacing is comfortable this time around.
