DEAR EDWARD, by Ann Napolitano

Literature -- 4 stars

One hundred ninety-one passengers and crew board a flight from New York to Los Angeles one beautiful summer morning.  Twelve year old Edward Adler is the only person to survive the flight.  After months in the hospital, Edward moves in with his aunt and uncle, two people he barely knows, and discovers he has become a national hero, something he doesn't want or understand.  With the help of Lacey who lives next door, Edward learns to find his place in the world while accepting that there will always be holes where people he loves should be. ----- Crisis, loss, friendship, and healing written with a gentle voice and an understanding heart. Anyone who has suffered a personal loss will relate to Edward's struggle and rejoice in his journey.  Chapters following the flight as it heads west add tension and alternate with chapters following Edward's new life--a balance that keeps the story from becoming too saccharine.  This book is a cup of tea and a warm hug in a cold world.
