THE REPLACEMENT CHRONICLES, by Harper Swan

Literature -- 1 1/2 stars

Mark Hayek is a 21st Century research scientist.  Raven was a healer who lived in the Pleistocene age.  Though separated by centuries, their stories cross when Mark travels to the Middle East to recover his late uncle's ashes. ----- This three-part story was advertised as a new Clan of the Cave Bear.  They lied.  It's been decades since I read Jean Auel's books, but I remembered that I loved them.  This book is two stories, written in alternating sections, each as implausible as the other, and neither exhibiting any of the indepth research that make Ms. Auel's books so fascinating.  Raven's Human clan displays a level of language and sophistication surely not seen until well past the time of the Neanderthal.  Mark Hayek's story is stretched into incredulity to ensure the two stories cross.  He is also a totally unlikeable character.  At least Raven (if you ignore the obvious historical flaws) is a human you can root for.
