THE DOLL FACTORY, by Elizabeth Macneal, narrated by Tuppence Middleton
Mystery/Thriller, Historical Fiction, Gothic -- 5 stars
Audiobook Narration -- 5 stars
Book: Two sisters work side by side in a small doll shop. Rose sews clothing while Iris paints faces, but longs to be a true artist creating her own canvases. When Iris attracts the attention of the artist Louis Frost, she leaves the doll shop to become his model on his promise that he will teach her to paint. But Mr. Frost is not the only person whose attention she has garnered. ----- Set upon the background of London's Great Exhibition in 1850, this gothic pyschological thriller oozes eeriness that grabs you from the first page. The characters are well drawn and complex, and the story is well written with an unrelenting tension that builds and builds and builds to a satisfying ending. Fans of The Alienist will love this book. (I think it's actually better).
Narration: Ms. Middleton sets the tone to perfection. Without depending on false voices or odd inflections, she let's the story tell itself. Her well-paced reading kept me listening and engaged. Brava.
