COLD STORAGE, by David Koepp

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars

Two bioterror officers are sent to investigate a remote village in Australia.  What they discover is a killing organism so horrifying that they order the entire area burned to a cinder.   It should have ended there, but a scientist accompanying the team insisted on bringing a sample of the organism back to the U.S.  Storing it deep in the earth in a government secured facility kept it safe.  Then global warming happened. ----- This is a book squarely in the thriller genre, and a well-written one at that.  Which raises the question:  How can a premise so patently ludicrous be, at the same time, so profoundly plausible?  Pseudo-scientific "evidence" may raise the question, but in the end, interesting characters and fast pacing make the question moot.  Just enjoy the ride.
