UNDER LYING, by Janelle Harris

Mystery/Thriller - 4 stars

Susan and Paul throw an open house for the neighbors when they move to County Cork.  Susan thinks it will be a great way to introduce themselves to their new village; but during the party, their toddler daughter, Amelia, goes missing.  A child's disappearance brings suspicious investigators, and Susan and Paul's relationship crumbles as secrets come out into the open. -----  This story starts out as pretty vanilla, maybe even a little slow.  An abrupt turn around changes everything.  Surprises are always welcome in mysteries, but this one arrives completely out of the blue with nothing from the earlier chapters to support it and its clumsiness threatens to completely destroy the story's flow.  Eventually Ms. Harris returns to solid ground, but it's like reading two different books for a few chapters.  Once the secrets start to flow, the story races to a tension filled conclusion.  An epilogue puts a surprising final issue to rest, softening the edges of a story bracketed by loss.
