THE WHISPER MAN, by Alex North

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 1/2 stars

When Tom Kennedy's young wife dies suddenly, he is left to raise their small son, Jake, alone--a task for which he feels woefully inadequate.  Jake talks to an imaginary friend, something that his dad discourages even though is son is a solitary soul with no real playmates.  Deciding to move to a new house in the small town of Featherbank, they are hoping for a new beginning, but they don't know the town's history--one that involves missing boys.  When Jake hears the whispers, it's obvious he is the next target.  ----- A quiet and eerie story that evolves around a damaged father and son who are so sympathetically portrayed, you want to hug them both.  The identity of the suspect is fairly cliched, but the subtle reveals about Jake and his invisible friends are like peeling layer after layer of an onion, each layer so logical you are left wondering how you missed it.  When the center reveals a truth so heartbreakingly sad and and beautiful at the same time, it's a moment to savor that you don't often find in a mystery story.
