THE DUTCH HOUSE, by Ann Patchett

Literature - 4 stars

When Cyril Conroy's hard work lifts his family from poverty to riches, his first big purchase is The Dutch House.  It is a mistake that resonates through everything he loves, and sets in motion a modern fairy tale of love, loss, hate, and revenge.  Cyril's two children, Maeve and Danny grow up depending on and protecting each other, a closeness that carries into and muddles their adult lives and relationships.  Eventually moving full circle, no one can really escape the Dutch House. ----- While some characters seem sketched, Maeve and Danny are rendered with a passion and a love that is both beautiful and frightening to witness, but the main character in this story is always the house.  It is the reason behind everything that happens; it is the force that tears families apart, and the magnet that pulls the broken pieces back together.
