THE NEW IBERIA BLUES, by James Lee Burke, narrated by Will Patton

Mystery/Thriller -- 5 stars
Audiobook Narration -- 4 stars

Dave Robicheaux - Book #22
Book: Desmond Cormier is a New Orleans native who made it big as a Hollywood film director.  Now he's back home working on a film in his home neck of the woods. When Dave Robicheaux stops in to see his old friend, he spots a young woman's body tied to a cross and floating in the ocean off the shore near Desmond's oceanfront property.  Desmond claims not to have seen it as does his strange companion.  When more bodies begin to appear, all linked by some kind of tarot theme, the New Iberia police department questions who is responsible, Desmond Cormier's Hollywood buddies or an escaped convict who was spotted jumping off a moving train in the days before the killing started. ----- Another intricately plotted tale, populated by the usual mix of interesting characters on both sides of the law.  There are so many possible answers that the solution is impossible to guess until the very end.  The climax is a bit hackneyed, but it does deliver a twist on the suspect list.

Narration:  Will Patton has made his mark with these Dave Robicheaux novels.  His reading style is so much a part of the enjoyment that this time around, it brings some disappointment in that he takes his whisper/drawl thing to such an extreme that he becomes almost a parody of himself.  I hope he reclaims a more solid, flavored-but-not-saturated performance in the next book.
