CALL YOUR DAUGHTER HOME, by Deb Spera

Literature -- 4 1/2 stars

It is 1924 in South Carolina, and three women--Annie, the wealthy matriarch of her family, Retta, a first-generation free black woman, and Gertrude, a poor woman trying to keep her children alive--seemingly have nothing in common.  But their stories intertwine in the way of all women just trying to survive in a world that has no pity for station or circumstance. ----- Beautifully written with an incite that makes all three women come alive, that turns their flaws into their strengths, and their strengths into a bonds that change them all.
