WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING, by Delia Owens

Mystery/Thriller, Literature -- 5 stars

A small town's favorite son is found dead in the swamp, and the obvious suspect is the Marsh Girl because she's different, and everyone knows different is bad.  That's how the book starts, but it doesn't take long for the mystery to become nothing more than minor background noise to the story of a little girl growing up on her own--an intelligent, talented, and curious little girl who never gives up, and the two boys who become her friends. ----- I found out about this book when I read an article about what independent bookstores were stocking for the summer season, and I will be forever grateful for the serendipity that led me to it.  Kya is a character to love, to respect, to root for, and to bask in her success.  Her story is one that will fascinate and move you.  It's been a long time since a book moved me to tears, but this one did it...and more than once.  Do not miss out on "the" read of the summer.
