THE SON, by Philipp Meyer

Literature -- 3 1/2 stars

The American West is exposed in all its violent, racist ugliness in this story of two families--one Mexican, one Texan--trying to wrest land from the Native Americans.  The epic story follows the families from the 1800s to the 20th Century, from Comanche kidnappings, to modern day oil barons, exposing the ugly underbelly of our history. ----- This story is told from the perspective of several people and from different points in Texas history.  This jumping around made for a bit of confusion in the beginning, but once I got the hang of who was who, it was a novel that kept me entertained--and often angry.  I know it has been turned into an AMC series.  I don't have cable so I can't say how they are handling it, but if they keep jumping historical periods as the book does, you'll need a scorecard.  I think the book would have been stronger if it had just followed the families chronologically.  The jumping around seemed more a gimmick than an artistic choice.
