THE BETTER SISTER, by Alafair Burke
Mystery/Thriller - 2 stars
Chloe is the younger of the two Taylor sisters. She's also the successful one, and she's married to her sister's ex-husband, Adam, and stepmother to her son, Ethan. When Adam is murdered in their East Hampton home, all three are suspects. Or does it have something to do with a merger Adam was working on at his law firm? ----- If that description sounds muddled, it should. This book IS muddled and unfocused. It is as though Ms. Burke couldn't decide whether she was writing a mystery or a family drama. While it's not wrong to include family details in a story like this, it doesn't help when the mystery itself seems to be pushed aside while we are forced to examine the details of Chloe and her sister's relationship ad nauseum. The end of the court case is rushed into a paragraph or two and then there is a second ending that exists somewhere in a grey area between right and wrong. Unsatisfying.
