THE LIFEBOAT, by Charlotte Rogan

Literature -- 3 1/2 stars

In 1914, a luxurious ocean liner mysteriously explodes on its way from England to America.  Newly wed (and newly wealthy) Grace Winter is one of the lucky passengers to find a seat on one of the lifeboats.  Rescued after 21 days, Grace and two other women are now on trial for their lives. ----- Tense and atmospheric in the beginning, the book seems to lose focus at the end.  The deterioration of the daily lives of the lifeboat refugees is well imagined.  Their petty arguments and power struggles add tension as the single ocean liner crew member morphs from respected expert and guide to perceived villain.  What is the truth?  Just as this question heats up, Ms. Rogan abandons it and jumps to the trial.  It's like two books, and the second one is the weaker for it.
