ONCE UPON A RIVER, by Diane Setterfield
Literature - 2 1/2 stars
It's a dark, midwinter night, and the locals have gathered at a tavern famous for its story telling. Into this company, a stranger enters carrying a dead child. Laid in the ice house until the authorities can be summoned, hours later the child stirs to life. Now three families want to claim her--a mother who is sure she is her kidnapped daughter, a farmer just made aware of his son's fatherhood, and a preacher's housekeeper who believes it is her younger sister. A conglomeration of folk lore, science, and mystery. ----- I was really looking forward to this book after having enjoyed several of Ms. Setterfield's previous works. Unfortunately, this one didn't work for me. While it seems to be getting good reviews elsewhere, I admit to finding it a bit of a slog. The characters, none of whom are particularly likable, seem shallow and unfocused. Somehow, even the child manages to be cold and unsympathetic.
