THE ROAD BEYOND RUIN, by Gemma Liviero

Literature - 5 stars

Four children in pre-war Germany spend their summers in two side by side country cottages outside Dresden.  They grow up to fight in WWII--not always on the same side.  Now it's 1945 and the Europe is trying to put itself back together.  When a young Italian, on a long walk home to find his family in Italy, comes across the two Dresden cottages, he thinks they are abandoned and decides to shelter in one for the night.  But the cottages are not entirely empty.  They are haunted by four childhood friends--living and dead--who have secrets they want to keep.  An intricate story of war and love and loss, of betrayal and revenge.  Beautifully written with realistically painted, humanly flawed characters who will stay with me for a while.
