WINTER LOON, by Susan Bernhard

Literature -- 4 stars

Wes Ballot's father disappears for months at a time leaving him with his alcoholic mother. When his mother falls through the ice and drowns in front of Wes' eyes, his father leaves him with his grandparents, who have no desire or ability to care for him, promising to return in the Spring.  As the months go by with no sign of his father, Wes falls under the influence of an local American Indian girl and her family, and discovers the meaning of "family" for the first time.   Interesting characters who could be written as Hallmark-style stock, but through sensitive writing manage to remain genuine.  A sad, sweet story that finds you rooting for an ending that doesn't happen, but is more real for that lack.
