The tiny college town of Ludlow wakes to find their church deacon is dead. The cause is reported as suicide, but when questions are raised about that conclusion, Barbara Havers is sent to investigate the investigation. She's sure something is amiss, but she is called back to London where she files the report her immediate supervisor tells her to file. Then she writes a second report and shows it to Lynley who returns with her to Ludlow to search for the truth. As always, Ms. George provides plenty of suspects and interesting, well fleshed characters for Lynley and Havers to dig into. Lynley novels are always a treat. This one--an intricately plotted, Gordian knot of a story that unfolds over 704 pages of mystery-lover nirvana--is one of Ms. George's best.
