DARK TIDE RISING, by Anne Perry
Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars
William Monk - Book #24
In mid 1800s London, Jacobs Island is a slum that even the Thames River Police avoid, but when a young woman is kidnapped, that is where her husband is instructed to bring the ransom. The kidnappers don't say he must come alone, so Monk and five of his officers accompany him--to disastrous result. Now there are two mysteries to solve: what happened to Kate Exeter, and who betrayed the police' plans? Anne Perry comes through again. This series is solid and reliable with stories that are clever, and characters who are always interesting. While reading the series in order isn't strictly necessary, the background development of the main characters book to book adds a welcome and cozy depth.
