THE CLOISTER, by James Carroll

Historical Fiction -- 1 star

Two alternating stories:  #1 Father Michael Kavanaugh meets Rachel, a scholar of medieval history at The Cloisters in NYC and discusses the relationship between Christians and Jews in ancient history.  #2 Peter Abelard meets Heloise in the eleventh century and discusses the relationship between Christians and Jews in biblical history.  To say this book was a major disappointment would be an understatement.  I expected Abelard and Heloise to be fleshed out, maybe even to become more than the almost mythical figures they are.  Instead I got long paragraphs that read more like a philosophy text than a novel.  The modern day story was more of the same. I finished it because I'm stubborn.  Uninspiring, with dull prose, and flat characters.
