THE WATCHMAKER'S DAUGHTER, by C.J. Archer

Fantasy, Mystery/Thriller -- 5 stars

Glass and Steele - Book 1
In Victorian England, India Steele has been cheated out of her late father's watchmaking shop by her ex-fiance.  Determined to tell him off, she goes to the shop and causes such a scene that all the customers leave--all except one, Matthew Glass.  And so begins the partnership between two unlikely people.  Mr. Glass, who may be a wanted American outlaw, has a watch that somehow keeps him alive, but it is failing.  Ms. Steele is an expert watchmaker unaware of the watch's magical properties when she agrees to help him find the craftsman who created his timepiece. ----- The magic in this book is not of the spell and cauldron variety.  Shunned by the "artless," those blessed with magic don't wield it so much as inhabit it.  Some are even unaware that their particular successes are more than just talent.  A fast moving plot, wonderfully quirky characters, and a good mystery make this a particularly fun book.  I'm ready for more Glass and Steele.
