THE JEKYLL REVELATION, by Robert Masello

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars

While out checking the drought ravaged Topanga Canyon, environmental scientist Rafael Salazar finds an old trunk. Inside is a small flask and a diary once belonging to Robert Lewis Stevenson.  From there the story splits, and while Mr. Salazar is a sympathetic and likable character, his story pales next to what he reads in the diary.  Connecting Mr. Stevenson's mountain "cure" for his consumption, the writing of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and then throwing Jack the Ripper into the mix should be silly; but somehow it's not.  With a few interesting historical facts added in, it's a fascinating story idea and a very entertaining read, though I found myself wanting more diary and less Rafael Salazar.
