UNORTHODOX, by Deborah Feldman

Autobiography -- 3 stars

A true story, written by Deborah Feldman who grew up in the ultra-conservative Satmar sect of Hasidic Judaism.  She was made to follow rules governing who she could see, what she could wear, what she could read, what she could eat, where she could go.  One of the places she was forbidden to visit was a public library.  Ms. Feldman broke that rule and never looked back. -----  I found myself squirming against the constant on-guard mind-set that Ms. Feldman exposes when I wasn't being just plain amazed that she lasted as long as she did.  The writing is pedestrian, but the details of Hasidic life are as fascinating as the reasoning behind them.
