THE GOOD SAMARITAN, by John Marrs
Mystery/Thriller -- 4 1/2 stars
Laura works the phones at a suicide hotline, but she's not interested in saving lives, she is a predator and her callers are her prey. She wants to help them die. Flush from orchestrating a double suicide, she picks up the phone and meets Ryan. She thinks he's a perfect candidate to be her next victim, only she doesn't realize that, this time, she has become the prey. Or maybe not. Throw in an estranged husband, two daughters she believes she can win from their father, a teacher who is both target and tool, a boss who has a surprising secret of her own, and things really get complicated. This is one of those I-didn't-see-that-coming books where the line between good and evil is so blurred as to be nearly non-existent. The end, when it comes, is completely unexpected while making perfect sense. A fast and easy read that, even with less than stellar writing, I couldn't put down.
