A TANGLED MERCY, by Joy Jordan-Lake

Historical Fiction -- 4 1/2 stars

Kate Drayton, a young PhD candidate, returns to her childhood roots in Charleston, South Carolina to research the 1822 slave revolt.  As Kate investigates 1822 history, her own family's story is revealed as well.  The book is a comfortably written narrative that suffers from being totally predictable--until it's not. I did not see the climax coming, and that climax is a real slap in the face that brings current events into sharp and gut wrenching focus.  It's been a long time since I cried over a book, but this brought tears and chills.  Even the syrup-y ending couldn't lesson the impact.
