THE ADDRESS, by Fiona Davis

Literature, Gothic -- 5 stars

This is two stories wrapped around the famous Dakota apartment building in New York City.  One is a gothic novel set in 1884 when the Dakota was just opening and centers around a young British housekeeper and the building's architect.  The second is set 100 years later and is centered around a young decorator and her wealthy cousin.  The connection between the two is revealed in a well-paced, if somewhat predictable way.  This is one of those "comfortable" books that make you want to curl up with it and a cup of tea.  Both stories are well written with interesting secondary characters, though I enjoyed Sara's 1884 story a bit more.  The final cog in the stories' connection is a satisfying--and unexpected--one.
