MISSION FLATS, by William Landay

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars

A Boston D.A. is found dead in a deserted cabin in small town Maine by Sheriff Ben Truman.  Once the powers that be take over the case, the sheriff decides to follow them to Boston himself.  Everything he learns leads him back further in history.  Was the D.A. killed because of a current case or does this have something to do with the death of a cop 10 years ago?  Or does it go back even further than that?  And who is this secret informant everyone seems to know, but no one has ever seen? The character of Ben Truman, who has some secrets of his own, is a refreshing take on the determined law enforcement officer.  He admits he knows nothing, asks to learn and is taken under the wing of an experienced Boston narcotics officer and a retired Boston detective--no bitter, cop fighting bureaucracy in sight. It's a straight forward mystery with interesting secondary character development.  Only just before the end does the author seem to lose his way.  The solution that was being revealed in careful steps, suddenly seems rushed.  The epilogue helps to wipe away that slip up.
