STAR MOTHER, by Charlie N. Holmberg

Fantasy -- 4 stars

When a star dies, the Sun God must choose an earth mortal to birth its replacement.  It is a great honor, but comes with a price: the mortal mother dies at the birth.  Until Ceris.  Finding herself still alive and with a daughter star shining in the sky, the Sun God gives Ceris the chance to return to earth.  Expecting to return to her family, Ceris instead finds that 700 years have passed and she is alone. Meeting a godling, Ristriel, seems like good luck, until it becomes clear that Ristriel is being hunted by others in the celestial world, and now they're both in danger. ----- This is a fantasy that offers an intriguing world where humans worship a clever and original religion.  For all its inventiveness, there are touches--greedy, manipulative priests, arranged marriages--that make it a relatable earth.  Well thought out characters, and a secret that closes the circle on the story that proves fantasy doesn't have to depend on wizards and trolls to be satisfying.  There is a second book, Star Father, coming in the Spring.  I'm looking forward to it.
