Orphan X - Book 6
Book: When Evan Smoak was a boy, he was pulled from his orphan group home and trained for a secret government program. There, he became Orphan X. After years of government hidden dirty business, Evan quit the program, and dedicated himself to using his skills to helping the most helpless as The Nowhere Man. The government has been hunting him ever since. When an unofficial pardon is offered on the condition that he stop his clandestine activities, he agrees to retire. But when he hears from a woman asking for his help and claiming to be his mother, what can he do? ----- MacGuyver meets James Bond, and their training officer is John Wayne. All the technical gadgets and slow burning excitement building to an explosive climax are here, all the clever twists and solutions are present. What makes this book special is the human story of Evan Smoak that is front and center. We've been offered peeks into his development in previous books, but nothing this personal. It adds a dimension to his character that I didn't even know was missing. At the same time, this story is more fun. His relationship with his teen-aged ward is a main element of the story, and their back and forth word play made me smile more than once. I've never been sure about how these books would "read," but they are a gangbuster audio series. They do need to be enjoyed in order.
Narration: Scott Brick owns this series. His laid back style embodies the Evan character while still letting the excitement explode when the time comes. It's as though Mr. Hurwitz created Evan Smoak with Scott Brick in mind.
