THE GIRLS IN THE STILT HOUSE, by Kelly Mustian

Literature -- 4 stars

Ada promised herself she would never return to the Trace, but that was then.  Matilda runs to the Trace when she needs a place to hide.  Two teen-aged strangers--one white, one black--who end up together after a murder and its concealment binds them. They can't hide in the isolated shack forever, but leaving the Trace will make them a target for powerful people who will do anything to protect their own secrets. ----- This is a story told in shades of gray where every character steps over the line between right and wrong in an effort to survive the one true evil living among them.  Ms. Mustian slowly reveals the mysteries surrounding the secrets of each of the girls' actions giving their characters a richness that covers for the predictability of the plot.  A novel seemingly designed to become a binge-worthy Netflix limited series, this is a satisfying and comfortable piece of girls lit, perfect for a cloudy fall day.
