Horror -- 5 stars
The world we see is not the only reality. Lisey learns that early in her twenty-five year relationship with her best selling author husband, Scott, when he gives her a glimpse of the beauty of the place he and his brother called Boo'ya Moon. But not everything is pretty on the other side. Two years after Scott dies, Lisey begins the herculean task of sorting through his papers only to be sidetracked when one of her sisters becomes catatonic after arriving to help and a rabid fan of Scott's work begins to torment her over ownership of his legacy. The answers to Lisey's problems may be found in Scott's alternate world, but that means Lisey must learn to cross over by herself and face whatever waits there alone. Fortunately, Scott has left her a plan, if only she can figure out his clues. ----- Jumping between flashbacks, stream of consciousness, and a simple chronological story, this alternative reality tale demands your attention. Mr. King's gift for word play is on full display here in a way that brings smiles more often than shivers. Lisey is a strong, sympathetic character presented whole in the beginning. Scott, a beautiful soul at the mercy of his childhood experiences, is revealed slowly. Yes, this technically is a work of horror, but more than anything, it is a love story--love between a child and a father, love between siblings, and the all encompassing love that binds a husband and wife.
