Mystery/Thriller -- 5 stars
It all began 30 years ago with an accident, a single flap of a butterfly's wing, but the repercussions continue to ripple. Star, scarred by past events, is an alcoholic with two kids. Her oldest, Duchess, is trying to look after her little brother by convincing everyone she is tough. Neighbors in this small town know each others' business and try to simply stay out of the way. Walker, perhaps the most haunted by past events, is now the sheriff who believes he can protect everyone--especially his best friend. But when past and present collide, nobody can stop the catastrophe that threatens to sweep them all away. ----- So many characters, each flawed in its own way, so much tragedy, so many stories. Mr. Whitaker manages to keep them all connected and true, all relatable, all worthy of empathy as he follows the butterfly's initial puff of air through their world and back out again before colliding with itself in a powerful story of love and chance. This is not a happy book. But you will remember it.
