THE WHISPERING HOUSE, by Elizabeth Brooks

Gothic -- 3 1/2 stars

While attending a wedding at Byrne Hall, Freya Lyell sees a painting of her sister, whose body was found on the beach near there five years earlier.  Their family had no connection to the Hall, so why would her sister's portrait be hanging there?  Drawn back to the area, Freya meets the owner's son and his enigmatic mother, and soon finds herself drawn into the mystery of the house and her sister's place in it. -----  Eerily atmospheric, this modern day gothic tale moves along a predictable story line, steeped in sadness and impending tragedy with a deliberate descent into the shadow life between love and obsession.  The characters are solid with enough ambiguity that it takes a while to know where the actual danger lies.  Slow paced, but never stagnant, Ms. Brooks takes us where we need to go and back out again.
