Mystery/Thriller -- 4 1/2 stars
Harriet, known to her friends as "Hal," is broke, and the people from whom she borrowed money are not happy with her. When a mysterious letter arrives, claiming she is an heir of Mrs. Westaway, she figures she should go to the funeral, even if she has never heard of the woman. After all, few thousand pounds would sure come in handy right now. But after meeting the family she never knew she had, it doesn't take long for Hal to realize there is something very wrong here. ----- This is a modern day, Gothic-flavored mystery complete with the cold, tumbledown house and the spooky housekeeper. The family is a mixed lot of interesting characters who will keep you guessing, but it is Mrs. Westaway herself who adds the evil to this mystery stew. Ms. Ware holds the clues close, parceling them out one at a time, and keeping the suspense ratcheted up until the final truth is dropped like a bomb. This is a storyteller at the top of her game.
