Rosato & Associates - Book 5
Book: When Jack Newlin finds his wife murdered, he is sure his emancipated, 16 year-old daughter is responsible. In an attempt to protect her, he goes to the police and confesses. But what if he's wrong? ----- I am a big fan of Lisa Scottoline, but this is not her best effort. Slow pace, obvious guilty party, unrealistic characters make for a ho-hum experience. A late plot twist does add one moment of ah-ha! that I have come to expect from Scottoline books, but by then it is too late.
Narration: I have listened to other Barbara Rosenblat narrations, some were fine, some less so. But none were as irritating as this example. Ms. Rosenblat employs a vocal trick known as vocal fry to such an extreme that it made me want to scream. In this book, her idea of characterization is to have one of the main characters speed-talk. Mix that with the vocal fry and a squeaky delivery and, well... Sadly, she doesn't need these crutches. Her normal speaking voice, which she employs for male characters and narrative passages is pleasant and easy to enjoy. I wish she'd quit trying to be cute and just read.
