Bocephus Haynes - Book 1
Bocephus Haynes is the only black lawyer in Pulaski, Tennessee, and his life is spiraling out of control. His wife is dead, he has lost custody of his kids, and his law license has been suspended. Despite all the negatives, when District Attorney General Helen Lewis is accused of killing her ex-husband after he threatens to reveal a decades old secret, it is Bocephus she turns to for help. Turns out, she isn't the only one with a secret in Pulaski. ----- I found the beginning of this book confusing--too many characters, too many sub-stories all introduced with little definition of which story was which, and all the information crowded into a few pages. Once the initial information was gotten through, the story became a pretty straight forward legal thriller. Bocephus is likeable if a little flat. The introduction to Helen turns out to be far more interesting than her actual character. The pace is somewhat slow, plodding along until the semi-surprise ending that may have lifted the energy level; but, in the end, I couldn't help but think Helen's big secret was not worth all the fuss.
